I quite enjoy my (really undeserved) reputation as a fashionista.
My hatred of wasting money, and inability to throw anything away (don’t tell my husband I confessed to that) makes this hobby far more challenging than it needs to be. So, when by the purest chance, something in my wardrobe is right on the button in terms of the zeitgeist, I get quite chuffed. So it happened a few weeks ago when I was browsing through the fashion articles (bad) in The Guardian (good). To cut a long story short, it turns out the knee length grey suede boots I bought a couple of years ago in Florence (on special, no less, although I did then have to cart them half way back around the world to get them home), are exactly the right shade-of-the-moment known as correct grey. This is the grey of knee length schoolboy socks from the uniforms of years gone by. Of course, I recognized this reference instantly, but for those of you too young to know what I’m talking about, here are some handy photos (and I can tell you, I’m going to feel much more comfortable once I’ve deleted these photos from my phone. A cougar is one thing, schoolboys are way over the line).
I’ve worn them a couple of times since reading this article, and they do look absolutely fabulous.
As always in life, though, there are a couple of caveats. Being suede, they are very intolerant of getting wet. I have more than one pair of suede boots with tide marks.. Since riding my scooter is my number one indicator for wearing knee length boots, this does somewhat hamper their usefulness. Of course, for a small fiscal outlay, I could get them scotchguarded or similar. The other problem is that the sole under the heel of one boot is slightly loose. This means that whenever I walk along a hard floor, such as anywhere in a hospital, it makes a tapping noise like a pirate with a peg leg. I can’t help but feel that this must detract from my attempts to look sophisticated and stylish. I expect the fix for this could also be fairly simple, by going to any shoe repair person and putting myself in their hands. Since they are the correct grey I can see I just need to consider this an investment. I’ll do it this week. Or maybe next.
