I bought this lovely long grey woollen coat last winter.
It’s been great, the only thing that would improve it would be if it had real pockets instead of those stupid faux ones that women’s clothes so often have.
Honestly, what are the designers afraid of? Are they lazy, or does it destroy the line of the garment somehow, in a way that doesn’t matter for men’s clothes? Are they afraid of what we’ll put in there? (Phones, keys, handkerchief, lipstick, a knife, guns…)
But then last week I noticed these little flaps on the inside of the pockets.
They seemed to be blind pouches with no external connection. Could it be that they were embryonic pockets after all, waiting to be born, delivered by someone brave with a sharp implement? Surely that’s what they were, I told myself, but I couldn’t see any line of sutures to cut through. In the end I decided just to go for it, and dig around with a stitch cutter. At the worst, I’d have a hole through the faux pockets. It’s too cheap to have a lining so it would go straight through to the clothes underneath. But I just couldn’t resist the chance.
And it worked! I now have no less than three pockets in my newly favourite coat. Now, I wonder if any of my other clothes have similar hidden depths?
