Half way through the list, her phone rang, and one of the nurses took a message. It was her Croatian grandfather calling, and she said she\u2019d ring him back after we were done.<\/p>\n
She didn\u2019t seem particularly excited by the prospect of talking with him, and she explained to us that he was a complicated man. For years he\u2019d maintained that as a child, he\u2019d been on holiday in Egypt during WW2. \u201cHow long were you on holiday for, Papi?\u201d \u201cTwo years\u201d. \u201cWow! That\u2019s a long time, especially during a war\u2026\u201d Doing some reading on the period recently, she\u2019d discovered that he\u2019d actually been in a refugee camp over that time. \u201cRefugee camp! Pshaw. We had fun.\u201d \u201cBut Papi look, here\u2019s a photo of a memorial they have over there, to all the children who died of disease and malnutrition while interned there.\u201d \u201cOh you young people make such a big deal of everything! I tell you, it was that thing, what do you call it? Glamping! We were glamping.\u201d<\/p>\n
