We\u2019re doing an eight hour long spine case in silence, all because our surgeon refuses to listen to Christmas music.<\/p>\n

He\u2019s originally from Germany, and even after over a decade in our country, he cannot bring himself to celebrate the festive season in Summer. He says his children think he\u2019s mean and no wonder. What a grinch! I suppose most of our Christmas culture – movies, decorations, songs, cards (remember those?!) – are based around some mythical idealised Victorian Northern hemisphere celebration, so maybe we\u2019re all in some degree of denial.<\/p>\n

At least when I got let out for a quick lunch half way through, I got to see this terrific view from the tea room window.<\/p>\n

I love hard work! I could watch it for hours.<\/p>\n

In the end the case finished sooner than expected, and I managed to get to the basin reserve before tea so that I could watch the last session in the afternoon sun. Alas, it was not to be. The West Indian team rolled over and capitulated horribly in their second innings, so that I only got to see the last two balls being bowled before the Black Caps strolled to a nine wicket win. At least I was there, even if it was all over before I got the chance to sit down.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
