Tokyo 10/4/2025

Our flight got in yesterday evening, and by the time we’d Ubered in to our hotel I was knackered and ready for bed. With a three hour time difference, I woke up at 4:30 and thought I’d be awake the rest of the night, but the next thing I knew it was 8 am and I was almost late for breakfast.

The hotel breakfast was included with the room, and is very impressive. Not as extensive as our hotel in Dubai a couple of years ago, but the buffet was beautifully presented and very dainty, a mix of Japanese and Western style foods.
Our table by the window was a great spot for people watching, which was mostly office workers or salary men at this hour of the day. Most men are in black business suits with white shirts and ties. Women are often also in suits, or in equally subdued outfits in neutral tones. Hair and make up are tidy, and women wear court shoes with low heels. No patterns, no colours. My clothes do not fit in at all, but as Simon says, no one was ever going to think I was a local anyway, so why even try? At least I don’t have anything too outrageous or offensive, such as low cut tops.

After breakfast we walked to an electronic art gallery but it was booked out weeks ahead. From memory we’d tried to go to the same museum when we were here a couple of years ago and it was booked out then too, this obviously demonstrates a lack of foresight on our part. Actually though, we had a very enjoyable day just wandering around Tokyo on a lovely Spring day so everything turned out fine in the end.

Tokyo Tower
Studio Ghibli clock, it puts on a clockwork show several times a day
Sushi for lunch at a tiny restaurant beside the fish market

A brief nap back at our hotel before taking the underground to Shinjuku for pre dinner drinks at a sherry bar and then dinner at a popular restaurant. $35 each for all you can ear and drink but you have to do your own cooking. All well and good except the smoke made my eyes water, plus I can’t cook for toffee.

Everything very authentic apart from the Margarita pizza cooking under the cover

We had a window seat looking out over a busy pedestrian crossing so had a great view when the heavens opened about half way through our meal. Tired early after a full day of walking and jet lag remnants so ducked into the nearest subway and home for another early night.
