Thoughts on Spaniards

I have been in Spain almost a week so I’m now qualified to offer my opinion on the people here.

Something we have noticed is the surprising number of people who work in retail and hospo and don’t speak any English. It’s completely different to Portugal in that respect. They don’t seem to care if you try and speak the language either, whereas in Portugal they are pleased if you make the attempt.
Also, both the Spanish and the Portuguese are quite short. I’m tall for a woman here, and about the average height for a man.

In fact there is a noticeable absence of variety to the Spanish, a real lack of ethnic diversity. It might be something to do with the regime of Franco, the dictator that was in charge here for decades last century. Similarly, almost everyone here is Catholic, but with a substantial variation in how serious they are about it. This ranges from serious and pious, through to atheist, via just pretending.
I suspect the homogeneous nature of the populous allows them to be one of the most liberal Catholic countries around. No fear of immigrants here, in fact I don’t know where they all are. Aren’t we near Africa here? Similarly, we’ve seen a number of young male gay couples with infants that I’m guessing they’ve adopted.

Anyway, people seem nice and happy and there’s not much more you could ask for.
