Gardener’s remorse

I noticed yesterday that a Kawakawa tree was strangling one of my feijoas. The Kawakawa was a weed, not deliberately planted or even invited, tolerated up to now due to laziness and a vague feeling that since it was a native I ought to leave it alone.  But now that it’s becoming a killer I thought it was time to deal with it, and now I have. I’ve just cut all the stems.

But have I done the right thing? Don’t I get a sickening glut of feijoas every autumn? Isn’t kawakawa actually a desirable plant to have, not only native and obviously happy where it is, but also useful, something you can make tea out of, for example?

What have I done??
