Max got spayed on Thursday.
I hadn’t got around to booking her in but then last weekend I read that little breeds tend to go on heat at four to six months of age. Woopsie! The last thing we wanted was puppies with her best friend Georgie, who is a gorgeous wee man but not ready to be a dad (apart from, you know, physically.)

The surgery went uneventfully, although they charged extra for removing a couple of baby teeth. When we picked her up that afternoon, they gave us a big list of stuff she wasn’t allowed to do. No walks, no jumping, no stairs, no playing. In other words, can you just have her sitting quietly for the next few days, please?

It’s true, she was a little subdued when they brought her out, but I suspect that was just the horrible old battle axe of a receptionist, that everyone hates, making her unusually circumspect.

The first thing she did when we got her home was to poo and wee on the carpet in the dining room, in less than the time it took me to say “we’d better shut all these doors, just in case”.

That evening I brought both the poochies up to the beach house, because there aren’t any stairs here. That first night she was a bit whiny, but since then, she’s been as right as rain. Of course, the whole plan of keeping her quiet has been a bust. This is her quietly recuperating yesterday.

I even bought her a cone of shame, so convinced was I she’d be chewing at her stitches in no time, as has been the tendency for our more highly strung (AKA neurotic) dogs in the past (i.e. all of them).

Pristine and unused so far

In fact, she has very little interest in her surgical wound.

What’s wrong, mum? You’re being creepy.

She’s the least problematic dog we’ve ever had, barring the magnificent Grace that we inherited with the first house we ever bought, in Island Bay back in the 90’s.

Ironically, she has a psychotic stare due to her very dark irises and no visible white of her eyes, and she is certainly full of hubris and not much given to introspection.

Do I recognize those eyes from somewhere?

She kept us on our toes during puppy class, too, because you could never be absolutely certain she’d do what you asked when on the spot in front of everyone. But in fact she passed her exit exam with flying colours, and most importantly, we love her to bits.
