Bumped into a colleague this morning as we were both seeing our preop patients on the hospital admission ward.

I asked him how his 50th birthday party went on Saturday night. He said it went well, looking a little embarrassed, and that he was sorry but he couldn’t invite everyone. Harrumph, I thought to myself – what he meant was that he couldn’t invite “just anyone”, myself included. In retaliation, I said how much I enjoyed my own 50th, a big celebration I had back in COVID times, between lockdowns. The downside of saying this, of course, is revealing how much older than him I am, but I felt it was worth it to demonstrate that I couldn’t invite “just anyone” to my party, either, including, obviously, him.
