Istanbul – supplementary

The Turkish drink mostly tea here, not the thick, sweet coffee they are famous for.

The word Chai for tea is the same in Hindi, and is derived from the work Cha in China. In England they will sometimes say Char, which is mostly working class I think? My family were tea drinkers when I was growing up. “Cuppa char?” translates to “Would you like a cup of tea?”

I forgot to mention the call to prayer which you can hear everywhere five times a day. It’s a form of singing/chanting/yodeling that is actually quite nice, and lasts for about a minute. The only one that might be considered mildly intrusive is the one that is broadcast half an hour before sunrise, this morning I heard it at 5:45. I was having a sleepless night for some reason.

I found this picture on the wall at the restaurant where we ate last night.

It turns out Vice President Joseph Biden ate here in 2012. The letter reads:

What a nice guy. This actually marks the first time I have eaten somewhere that I’ve known the POTUS has also eaten. A landmark of sorts.
