Farewell to Edinburgh

We’re back at Edinburgh airport, which is beginning to feel Iike a second home.

Just left a lady weeping at the Aspire lounge desk. Her flight to Exeter has been cancelled due to heavy rain and thunderstorms at her destination. I feel sorry for her but we’ve had our share of dramas too and I’m hoping for plain sailing today. So far our flight is only 15 minutes delayed so fingers crossed.

On our last morning in Edinburgh we decided to climb Arthurs Seat. I had climbed it before as a student many years ago. I was up there for midsummer night, so it barely got dark all night. I had no memory of the climb so I assumed it was fairly straightforward. How wrong I was!

It was quite a trek up, and it’s obviously a very popular Sunday activity here in Edinburgh. The track was thronging (thronged?) with people, both locals and tourists, children, and dogs. I could only snatch an unflattering selfie at the white marker at the top.

Google maps described it as ‘less busy than usual’, it’s hard to imagine how it could be busier! It was like a conveyor belt up there. How does Google know how busy it is I wonder? Are they pointing their satellites at us? Is it the conglomeration of everyone’s phones? Are they tracing our COVID vaccine tags with 5G?? The possibilities are endless. We decided to take the route less travelled on the way down. There was a reason why it was less travelled.

We had also been advised by Richard, our Edinburgh Castle tour guide, to go up Calton hill on our way back. This was peanuts compared to the climb we had just completed but it did allow us to look back at where we had just come from and take photos.

Arthur’s seat is the highest peak you can see here (the rounded one at the back)

Then it was back to our digs to pick up our bags and head out to the airport. In the lounge I’ve had time to change out of my Edinburgh attire (sneakers and jeans seem ubiquitous here for all ages) and into something more appropriate for business class travel to a hot and conservative country. We’ve just completed boarding so wish us luck.
