I forgot to mention that yesterday was the winter solstice, which actually doesn’t mean a lot here because we’re so near the equator.
Sunset today, for example, will be at 6:08 pm, whereas on December 22nd it will be at 6:45 pm. Personally I like a bit more variety in my seasons. Nothing so extreme as the months of daylight and darkness you get near the poles, but something in between, such as we get in the 40s latitudes. Yay!
After breakfast today we went to look at some more lava fields. These were even more interesting than the ones we saw the other day, because they had gone through a village. The eruptions occurred just over a century ago, over several years. The building remnants still visible are an old church, and some European man’s house.
The most impressive thing to see according to the locals was the grave of a chief’s daughter which had miraculously been spared from the lava because she was so pure. I snorted with derision when I heard this but quietly and inoffensively. The path to the grave was very well maintained, but in order to go the 100 metres further along to the ruined house, you virtually need to bush crash.
Not sure how you can explain the lava flowing through the church then? It’s the old out of “The Lord works in mysterious ways!” I suppose.
After that it was back to the resort for lunch. Actually we went to the resort next door for lunch, and we’re going there again for dinner tonight because our resort is having a buffet and “string band” and we are grinches.
In the afternoon I went for a snorkel. Magical. Big schools of fish swimming around, and I saw another turtle.
In the meantime, I’ve been reading the WhatsApps from work, apparently there was some huge IT catastrophe this morning, it sounded very stressful and I’m glad I’m here. My hardest job is choosing out of the cocktail menu. I can’t have pina colada every night.
