Fear as fun

It’s a boom time for horror movies, apparently.

Academics reckon these sort of interests help us learn to deal with the scary shit life throws at us sometimes. In fact, recreational fear may have contributed to ‘dark copers’ being better with the psychological resilience required to endure during COVID.

There was an article on this in the Guardian over the weekend, and it included a link to a morbid curiosity test.

I must confess I ended up on the psychopathic end of the scale, which seems a little unfair. How can you conflate an appetite for seeing a head transplant, or a limb amputation  – both surely a professional interest for me? – with wanting to watch a public execution? – definitely not something I’d be keen to do in my spare time? Remember I was banned from watching Squid Game by my (over)protective children. Similarly, I’d be happy to watch a scary ghost movie, but torture porn has never been my thing. Anyway, my survey result will be on their books, skewing their results, and I’m not taking any of the blame for their poorly designed questionnaire.
