No flies on me

We’ve seen a few tour groups walking around town the last couple of days with ID cards on lanyards proclaiming “Neurofly”.

It looked like they were all here for some sort of conference. Well, I really like neurosurgery and neuroanaesthesia, so I wondered if it might be a topic that I would be interested in. On googling “Neurofly Saint Malo”, it turns out to be the 19th European Drosophila Neurobiology conference. I remember drosophila melanogaster as the fruit fly that we studied for genetics. Its got enormous chromosomes in its salivary glands if I remember rightly. Who’d have thought there’d be enough drosophila neurobiology experts in the entire world to fill more than a small closet, but there you go. There were hundreds of them. I’m a big fan of science, and this sounds like a branch that would be chronically underfunded, so I hope they’re really enjoying their rare work jolly.

Too late to register I’m afraid. Better luck next year.
