A night out

Spent the evening with a lovely bunch of women from work, going to dinner and a show.

I only got my invite this morning, whereas it’s obviously been planned for some weeks. Clearly I was late cover for a  COVID absence or some such. I shall try not to be aggrieved.
The highlight of the evening was someone saying to me that I looked beautiful. It surprised me as I had just been thinking I was the oldest one there, and I looked it, amongst all these dewy complexions of colleagues who also never see the sun. Plus, my hair was particularly recalcitrant this evening, I was sweating through my foundation, and I discovered to my dismay when I got home that my mascara was smudged. All this may be true, as well as the fact that it was dark and she was sitting at the other end of the table, but it still made me feel good.
Amongst various serious topics we discussed over dinner, there was a brief foray into fashion. Because we’re all as susceptible to flattery as I showed myself to be in the paragraph above, it doesn’t take much from helpful retail workers to separate us from our hard earned cash. One style trend that was universally unpopular when I mentioned it, though, was the peasant look that is currently fashionable in the Northern hemisphere summer. We have all been victims of fashion at various times but I’ll be surprised if this one catches on here. We shall see. This is from an article in today’s Guardian.

After a very nice dinner we went to see “Girl From The North Country”. It’s a musical set in depression era USA, and features songs from Bob Dylan. The acting and singing were excellent, and I always enjoy stories set in the thirties, where everyone starts off poor and miserable and things usually only get worse. The plot wasn’t great, though – I don’t even know who the titular girl was? If I was more familiar with Dylan’s music I would have enjoyed it a lot more.
