Echo chamber

I have a small role in helping to organize a local conference in October.
At last night’s progress meeting we were encouraged to get on twitter to help promote it. I got off twitter a year or so ago, worried that it was exacerbating my tendency to being passive-aggressive. But hey, if they don’t care about my mental well-being, I’ll rejoin, that’s absolutely fine.

The reality is, of course, that when I first signed up to twitter, I posted one hilarious tweet, got no response, and abandoned it in a huff. OK, but no – what really really happened was that I found myself wasting hours each day scrolling through Facebook, and then more doing the same thing on twitter. And it was doing my head in. I was only lucky I never actually understood instagram, or I’d have really been in trouble.

Anyway, being an obedient servant to the greater good, I’ve rejoined this morning, followed by an exploratory scrolling session. What amazes me is that everyone on twitter thinks exactly the way I do about everything. Trump is a douche, the Supreme Court are out of control puppets of the Christian hard right, poodle crosses are the best dogs ever…so how come the world is in such a mess? Inexplicable.
