Finally! After however many years of living in central Wellington with my harbour glimpse, I have finally spotted a marine mammal swimming there.
A pod of dolphins, no less. There were four of them swimming around near the boat club, although I only got one on camera.
I had seen a whole bunch of onlookers staring at the water as I cycled along the waterfront on my way home, so I knew something was up.
While I was watching, a red headed gentleman climbed into the water and began swimming towards them. It was on the tip of my tongue to shout out to the dolphins “attack the ginger!” but I thought that might go down poorly. The water was lovely and clear, and it was such a warm afternoon that I was tempted to join him for a swim, but I decided not to, partly in fear of being told off.
On the other hand, a gay couple I know were walking by the harbour this morning with their toddler in a stroller, when some asshole decided it was appropriate to mutter “f**king lezzies” as they walked by. So, Wellington is an awesome place but it’s not perfect.
