Overheard an argument among some ward nurses yesterday.
There was disagreement as to how to spell the word “yoghurt”. It’s a word that does have a couple of variations in standard spelling I believe – with or without an ‘h’. That wasn’t what they were arguing about, though. The nurse who was a German immigrant was certain that it was spelled in English with a ‘j’ at the start, in the face of the other two native English speaking nurses who said it was spelled with a ‘y’. I didn’t take part in the discussion but the German nurse spoke with such conviction I was doubting myself by the end. I wish I had could speak with such an air of authority on any subject, quite honestly.
NB I’ve looked it up, yoghurt is spelled ‘joghurt’ in German.
