In other words

My French teacher has lived in English speaking countries for nearly twenty years, but she retains her French accent and still wouldn’t pass as a native English speaker.
She is married to a Kiwi and has three children.
Sometimes during our lessons, a French word will come up and I will say “Oh yes, we have that word in English too!” Today’s words were insouciance and apogee, but she said “Oh my husband told me they weren’t English words!” Well, far be it for me to sow marital disharmony, but I’m on her side on this one. He needs to up his game or at least admit to being unsure. He sounds like one of those men who are never wrong.
(And yes, I know about faux amis: French words that sound like an English word, but actually mean something completely different. That’s not what I’m talking about. )
