I’ve always considered MacDonalds to be the epitome of soulless capitalist corporate greed – the cynical sacrifice of health and well-being with addictive fatty sugary fast food with zero nutritional merit, purely in search of profit. But at least it was reliable (plus, of course – the toilets were always clean).
Imagine my dismay this evening, then, when my husband offered to pick up some Maccas on his way home late from work and I asked for an apple pie – my favourite menu item since childhood – and he said they don’t make them anymore! Something to do with COVID, and the lack of dine-in customers, as well as limited availability of some ingredients, leading to a severe curtailing of their regular menu. It’s oddly jarring. Is this the “new normal” everyone keeps talking about? Maybe things really aren’t ever going back to the way things were…
