Guest post – Hair today, gone tomorrow

Much to the surprise of my parents, I made the recent decision to get a haircut.

This particular haircut being a switch from shoulder-length locks to a buzzcut. Such a drastic change often calls for some form of reasoning, of which there is plenty. For one, I’ve already noted a drastic drop in shampoo costs, in fact I’m looking into getting a 3-1 bottle and being done with it. Also, wet hair? – not a thing anymore. Gone are the days of having a damp towel wrapped around my head, and hairdryers have become obsolete.

It was midafternoon when my flatmate Frankie grabbed a pair of craft scissors and started hacking away at my hair. We started with a fun bob just to see what it looked like, and then pulled out the razor. In the end I had a hairstyle eerily reminiscent of Tintin – quickly solving my halloween costume problem. It’s been a week now, and I can gladly say I don’t regret it. Having spiky hair has always been a goal of mine, and I’ve been greatly enjoying the absence of hair ties in my life now. Oddly enough, it hasn’t been a very big deal. For such an aesthetically drastic change, no one’s blinked an eye. For that, I give credit to the student culture here in Dunedin – I wasn’t even close to being the first femme person* to get the chop. So here’s to Dunedin hairstyles – may the mullets bless us for at least another couple months.

*Ed note: Femme is slang for feminine looking person, usually lesbians (I did not know this)
