Sometimes I have a little trouble sleeping, so as I settled into reading my book last night in bed around ten, I was pleased to start feeling my eyelids getting heavy after a while, and I put my book down and started drifting off to sleep…….only to be rudely awoken by a message on my phone at ten to eleven. I couldn’t believe it! I was furious. It turned out to just be a social chit chat type message from a friend “just wanted to tell you before I forgot…” Of course then I’d missed my opportunity to drift off gently to sleep and started fretting about how tired I was going to be the next day. You might say, why not just turn my phone to silent, or turn it off completely. Unfortunately, I have patients in hospital that I might get rung about at any hour of the day or night, so that’s just not an option for me. Otherwise the nurses get really cross.
I heard a commentator on the radio a few weeks ago angrily ranting about someone who rang her at 9 pm the night before, which I felt vaguely guilty about. Sometimes I ring people that late, not realising that it might upset some. But 22:50 is surely too late for most? Or am I just getting old??
