The polymath brain surgeon I’m working with today is showing me up on the language front once again.
Already fluent in Italian and passable in Spanish, the last time I spoke to him he was brushing up on his French and already far more advanced than I was after four decades of trying.
Since COVID, he’s switched to Te Reo, and at our theatre briefing this morning, he introduced himself in Maori. He’s since been showing me on his laptop the homework he was doing last night – researching the various unfamiliar words and phrases for a YouTube translation into Maori of the lyrics of a Dave Dobbin song, and typing it all up on what looked like an excel spreadsheet.
In contrast, I had the day off yesterday, and spent it searching for red boots to buy online. You wouldn’t believe how hard it is to buy boots of any colour other than black or brown. I ended up ordering these bad boys:
Aren’t they gorgeous? And at least I’m doing my bit for the local economy…
