In theatre the other day with a complex patient, and the anaesthetic tech working with me said “Can you turn off the oxygen to the Hudson mask please, Doll?”
Well, that tech and I have worked together for many years, and get on well, but I was a little surprised by the informality of that term of address in a work situation. However, I wasn’t too bothered, and I reached around the anaesthetic machine to do as he asked, even though it was rather awkward from where I stood. In fact it would have been much more sensible of him to ask the nurse to do it, as she was closer. She is a lovely nurse from the Philippines, and her name is….Doll. Doh.
