A rash decision

My husband is a magnet for biting insects.

It’s actually a bit of a boon for any travel companions, because he lures all the little critters away from us, but I suppose it’s not very nice for him. He ends up looking like a smallpox victim.

In preparation for our upcoming Milford Sounds trip, he bought two bottles of insect repellent in Palmerston North last Friday. We left one in our accommodation in Hawkes Bay as a gift to our hosts, and so he then bought two more bottles at a camping shop in Napier on our way home.

To make absolutely certain we didn’t accidentally leave them behind whilst packing, he put them together in a secure location in our house this week. We arrived in Queenstown yesterday, and are going to buy some more insect repellant today to replace the ones we couldn’t find. Third time’s a charm! Presumably the repellant will turn up in a mummified form somewhere in our house in a few years time.

He also discovered this week that the colour red is a draw card for sandflies, which is a little upsetting as his pack is red. Sometimes when fate is out to get you, it’s just not worth fighting it.

As an aside, did you know that sandflies are known as “no-see-ums” in some (less literate, presumably Trump voting) parts of the USA?
