Delicate

My poor feetsies!

…and so it’s back to the drawing board in my search for a pair of sandals for our Milford track walk next month. I’m not asking for much! Something with good grip, that can get wet with no problems, that breathe, are comfortable, and that don’t give me blisters.

unfortunately, this is how my feet look after a punishing weekend.

It’s a bit hard to see but there are nasty blisters on both heels from my walk this morning*. I joined a group of young people in helping a mutual friend complete the North Island section of the Te Araroa great NZ walk. He started from Cape Rienga two months ago. It’s an incredible achievement.

sandals rubbing my heels as we ascended Mt Victoria, but by the time we got to Mt Albert I knew things were dire. I borrowed a pair of plasters from a better organised young friend, but they rubbed off immediately. I ended up doing the last 5 kms in bare feet. Luckily bare foot walking is trendy these days so it didn’t look as odd as it might have. Still embarrassing as I was twice as old as anyone else there and should have known better. The bizarre thing is, 65 odd years ago, my mum was with a group climbing Rangitoto in Auckland, and as she had blisters from her tramping boots, she did the climb in bare feet. Granted, she was in her early 20s, but it still gives my story a nice symmetry.

Coincidentally, I also have blisters across the front of my feet, but that’s unrelated. It’s due to staggering across town in high heels last night.

My poor feet are going to need some cherishing after this weekend.

*looks more impressive the next day
