Sweet and sour

A beautiful afternoon up here on the Kapiti Coast, and I met plenty of people out and about while I took the dogs for a walk along the Waikanae River.

Most people are nice, or do a good job of pretending to be: “hello!” “afternoon!” “lovely day!” or “thanks!” if I’m conspicuously pulling the dogs out of the way of their bicycle, for example. But some people just don’t look like they could choke out a smile if their life depended on it. And I’m not talking about the acutely sad, but rather the habitually displeased. Are they just having a bad day, these people? Has something awful happened in their lives? Or are they just like this all the time? It would be interesting to know. Although you’d have to find somebody else to ask them, as I have absolutely no desire to talk to them, the miserable sods.
