Mumbo jumbo

Upon returning down south to Uni, our daughter declared her intention of dropping her biochemistry paper. It’s arcane and unknowable and just too damn difficult, she said (I’m paraphrasing). The thing is, it was arcane and unknowable back in my day – last century – as well. Why has someone not done something about it? You can’t tell me there’s anything intrinsic about how atoms deal with each other that can’t have a simplified explanation.

I think these lecturers and professors just don’t want people to understand their topic. They want to be like druids or alchemists – their subject has to be full of inexplicable jargon and incomprehensible signs and figures, exactly with the intention of keeping knowledge out of the hands of ordinary mortals.

Academics, amirite?
