I bought this book in good faith:
It starts off in a perfectly reasonable fashion, as you’d expect: duck, swan, penguin, seagull, royal spoonbill (personal fave).
It’s after that, that things get dodgy. The author tries to pass off dozens of photos of the same bird (the NZ smallish brownish seabird) as if they were completely different birds. I bet he just went to the beach one sunny day and took loads of pictures of the same bird family.
Yeah nah – I don’t think so, mate! I wonder what he gets out of it? Maybe he gets paid per species? Or does he just want to pretend that his field of expertise is more special and important than it is? Anyway, clearly his book could be a much slimmer edition with more scrupulous editing.
You heard it here first.
