Coastal odyssey

Enormously long bike ride with hubby today, before he gets officially older tomorrow. It ended up rather longer than we’d planned as our original destination of Tuatara brewery, in the light industrial area of Paraparaumu, was a wash out as they had a band playing and wouldn’t let us in for a quiet resuscitatory beer and pizza. We tried the pub on route home, The Jolly Bar, but the kitchen wasn’t open, and no one was sitting outside, just inside in the gloom drinking jugs of Tui. You could almost hear the banjos. This meant a major detour for us, to the new Mexican restaurant on the Waikanae beachfront. A jug of sangria and a few tacos were exactly what the doctor ordered (two doctors in this case). We ended up covering 29.7 km, which pleased me as I got my 25k+ badge on the bike challenge.
I took my electric behemoth bike. Simon was initially sceptical but I think after 20 k of no refreshments, he was starting to think it wasn’t such a bad idea, I think. (Did I mention the headwind?)

The roadkill count was amazing. Not any of our doing, I might add. Even on my ebike I’m no danger to local wildlife.
Rabbits: a whopping 17

Hedgehogs: 2

Pheasants: 1

The pheasant was an anomaly, I would suggest, and not statistically significant, but the number of slain bunnies is hard to ignore. It’s difficult to know what conclusions can be drawn. Obviously number one is that cars are dangerous. Have the rabbits been doing what they do best, and had a population explosion? Has the drought made them suicidal? Clearly more research is  required.
