Arrived at our Pacific Island destination this afternoon (I’m not giving any further details for fear of being shopped) to find when our plane landed that my phone had been on the entire time and not in flight mode. I was mortified but interested also to notice that we hadn’t crashed. I wonder if the risks to airplane navigation are overblown? I remember some years ago that there used to be signs all through the hospital saying to turn off your phones because otherwise all the important and delicate equipment would malfunction. If memory served, it never stopped us using our phones in theatre or in ICU. It was some combination of supreme confidence that the risks were infinitesimal and also an overwhelming desire to remain connected. Well, we were right, in the end. Not due to any electrical or IT knowledge (who knows how technology works, am I right? Something to do with light waves? Or electrons? Or quantum maybe?), but just pure dumb luck.
Rest assured I’m not going to try my luck on the return flight, though. For four hours I can quite happily watch a movie.
