This statue celebrates the founding of Montréal in 1642 (originally called Ville Marie because they were rabid proselytizing Catholics).
It is now recognized as having been founded by two people, M Maisonneuve and a woman, Jeanne Mance. Of course, when they made the statue, history was all about what the blokes were doing, which is why he’s up on the pedestal and she’s down there on the left , looking after the children.
