Well there’s not a lot to Icy Straight Point. Apparently the entire wharf complex was built by and for the Celebrity cruise line.
However we walked the 1 1/2 miles to the nearest real town of Hoonah (think Eketa-huna)
It must be so bizarre to live in a tiny tin pot town of a few hundred people in the middle of nowhere that now gets inundated with thousands of people for a few hours every day or so in the season. I think the cruise line must have sweetened the deal for the locals – the footpath from the wharf to the town is beautiful and shiny and new, and there’s a brand new playground for the handful of children around. Or maybe that’s just taxpayer money? Anyhoo, it was a lovely hot day – I very much regretted not bringing my togs and jumping into the water with the local kids. And there were also loads of bald eagles around – there was a nest in a tree right in the middle of town on the main road.
They look majestic and regal but actually their call is rather shrill and babyish. Quite shatters the illusion.
