Coming to the end of my French Film Festival marathon – ten down, one to go (with a shout out to my daughter, who has come to them all with me). It’s been the usual mixed bag, with large doses of sex and death and wine. Yesterday’s film, The Summer House, was probably the lowlight, but even then, the scenery and clothes were great, and the subtitles were entertaining at least. In the penultimate scene, when the husband is swearing his undying love for his wife (spoiler alert!) just before he runs off with a younger woman, he is listing everything about her aging body that he will continue to love forever: her sagging boobs, her flabby tummy, her droopy butt, and even (with a dirty laugh) her white kitty.
